The advent of online education has completely revolutionised the way most business schools deliver learning. Now many universities and business schools around the world are offering online courses in order to reach students in even the most remote areas. Moreover it has also enabled a number of new institutes to spring up and provide online learning without the need of a traditional campus. However, as the online business study sector is still in its initial phase, none of the institutes have yet developed the ideal delivery model.

Influenced by the drive of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) to make free content available online, several major B-schools have started to offer digital courses which merge online learning with on-campus meetings. They have also developed virtual interactions imitate the discussions carried out in lecture halls. Many institutes are even gearing up to charge for the services and content.

David Smith says “The potential to reach new audiences and to integrate new ways of teaching means that online education is definitely here to stay.” Smith is the leader of the education practice at Simon-Kucher & Partners at the London office of the pricing and monetisation advisers. He believes that these schools however need to develop the perfect and most effective sustainable business models.

Moreover, numerous schools are attempting to modify their on-campus teaching methods and adapt them online; while many others are planning to redefine the market. Meanwhile prominent MOOC providers like edX and Coursera have achieved a new level by developing entirely online models where students can access the content for free, but you will need to pay for acquiring accreditation certificates. Several colleges and business schools have already started to offer their courses on the leading MOOC platforms; whereas others have developed their own platforms for delivering courses online, partly to offset the competition.

Blending The Learning Models

As a result of this, a new breed of B-schools have emerged which offer courses by blending the best of online learning and on-campus education. Almost all of these institutes believe in the code that online education is not an uninvolved and passive activity; rather it is an opportunity to interact with fellow learners and educators via online conferencing.

For instance HBX, the online learning platform of Harvard Business School offers online tuition but follows a rather selective admissions process with tuition requirements, unlike most MOOC platforms. Bharat Anand, faculty chairman and business administration professor of HBX, says “We went through a conscious effort not to go down the MOOC route. We wanted it to be more than just watching a video for 25 minutes. HBX is about interacting, asking others questions and getting involved online.”

Prof Anand adds that HBX is experiencing a wide demographic of learners from undergraduates to individuals in their 50s. He explains “With people who are older, we are seeing different motivations. People who are career switchers, but don’t think they have the skills; a second group of entrepreneurs or people who want to be entrepreneurs; and a third group of people coming from academic and not-for-profit backgrounds.”

Professor Bharat Anand believes that the future of business education will include both face-to-face and digital learning models and follow a “multiplatform” approach. He says “In some ways, the physical classroom will always be better.” But, he adds “There are things you can only do in the online world.”
